Breaking down the snatch

Two big problems I have with the snatch:

  1. I drop my chest
  2. I look down as I catch

These two things are bad, especially together.  I recently took some video of a snatch complex (Pull + Sn + OHS) and broke it down frame by frame to see if I could figure some things out.  On the left up top, I am catching the weight forward.  I am on my toes and the bar isn’t stacked like it should be.  But on the right, I have better depth and I am not nearly as forward as compared to the left.  Sure, I need to work on being more upright.  But to me, I see two really big differences in positioning and this is all inside the same complex.

As I broke it down, I wondered why receiving the snatch was so vastly different of a bottom position than my OHS.  Then it hit me.  When I stand up the snatch and go into my OHS, I have to move my feet out.  This tells me I am not moving my feet out enough to put me in a good position.  If my feet need to be out for the OHS, it would stand to reason that they would need to move out to be in a better position for the snatch, right?

I have been drilling this home with heaving snatch balances as well as drop snatches where my start position is narrow, forcing me to emphasize the moving of my feet.
